Map Display by Trump Highlights US Flag Covering North America and Greenland

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – President Donald Trump shared a map on Truth Social depicting the U.S. flag spanning much of North America. The illustration depicted Canada, Mexico, and Greenland beneath a design labeled “United States of America.” Additionally, the map extended over Iceland and parts of the Caribbean and Central America. Trump offered no accompanying explanation with the post. It maintained geographic labels for the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of America.

Trump map shows US flag across Canada, Mexico and Greenland
The Truth Social map placed Canada, Mexico and Greenland beneath US flag imagery.

The map was posted at 10:43 a.m. EDT on September 7 via his official Truth Social account. The post did not suggest any border modifications, treaties, or government orders. Canada and Mexico continue to be sovereign nations with borders recognized internationally. Greenland remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Iceland continues to be an independent nation. The image did not specify any legal process that might alter the status of the countries or territories depicted under the U.S. flag.

This map was part of a series of geography-related posts from Trump during the same time period. Earlier posts included images replacing New Mexico’s name with “New America.” Trump also promoted “Lake America” as a new designation for Lake Ontario. His administration previously instructed federal agencies to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America.” The president has also called for U.S. ownership of Greenland, although Danish and Greenlandic authorities have dismissed proposals to transfer control of the Arctic territory.

    Mexico Responds with Sovereignty Assertion

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a statement reaffirming Mexico’s independence and sovereignty. She emphasized that the country would not become a colony or protectorate of another nation. Her remarks coincided with September, a month when Mexico hosts annual celebrations commemorating its independence. The map placed Mexico beneath the same U.S. flag pattern seen over Canada and other regions. The post did not include any legal document or bilateral agreement concerning the U.S.-Mexico border. After the image’s publication, existing border arrangements remained unaffected.

The map also showed Canada fully covered by the U.S. flag. Trump has previously suggested the possibility of Canada joining the United States. On September 7, he also threatened restrictions on Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier unless it moved production to the U.S. Canada responded by imposing retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of U.S. goods following stalled trade negotiations. These trade measures were separate from the map post and did not change Canada’s territorial or political status.

    Greenland Maintains Danish Control

Greenland appeared prominently beneath the U.S. flag in the illustration. Trump has repeatedly voiced his belief that the United States should acquire Greenland, citing national security interests. However, Denmark and Greenland have rejected any U.S. ownership claims. The European Union announced a 200 million euro partnership plan for Greenland, spanning 2026 and 2027, focusing on digital connectivity, energy, education, and sustainable mining. Additionally, Denmark sent military personnel to Greenland in early September for Arctic training.

The Truth Social post lacked a caption explaining the map’s purpose or legal implications. It did not announce any policy change, territorial transfer, or modification to existing borders. Mexico remains a sovereign nation, Canada stays independent, Greenland retains its self-governing status within Denmark, and Iceland remains an independent country. The image stands as a presidential social media post without any official measure altering the legal status of the territories depicted.
