The milestone came on June 25 during the Group E match between Ecuador and Germany at New York New Jersey Stadium. The figure passed the former record of 3,587,538 fans, set at the 1994 tournament in the United States.
The record gives the 2026 World Cup the highest aggregate attendance in the competition’s history. It also came before the end of the group stage. The tournament opened on June 11 and runs across the United States, Canada and Mexico. It is the first men’s World Cup with 48 teams and 104 matches, up from 32 teams and 64 matches in Qatar in 2022.
The previous attendance mark stood for 32 years. The 1994 World Cup reached 3,587,538 spectators across 52 matches. The 2026 edition passed that number with a larger field, more fixtures and several high-capacity venues. The latest total reflects tickets counted through the turnstiles and covers the first 56 matches of the current tournament.
Attendance record comes in group stage
The record moment occurred during the Ecuador vs. Germany match in East Rutherford. Stadium screens showed the new tournament attendance figure as the match continued. Ecuador won the game 2-1 and advanced from Group E. Germany also progressed after finishing the group stage with enough points to move on.
New York New Jersey Stadium has been one of the largest venues in the tournament. The venue is also scheduled to host the final on July 19. Other large host stadiums have helped lift the total attendance figure during the opening stage. Matches have taken place across 16 host cities in North America, with venues in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Expanded format lifts aggregate total
