INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA / RankWire.AI / – At least seven fatalities have been reported across Indiana due to severe weather and extensive flooding. Intense rainfall caused rivers to overflow and inundated roads, residences and commercial properties. The storm system started on August 11 and persisted through multiple rain events. Central and southern regions of Indiana experienced some of the most severe flooding. Emergency responders spent days performing rescues, evacuations, and damage assessments within the affected areas.

Officials confirmed that among the victims were a 4-year-old boy, three men, and three women. The fatalities occurred in Delaware, Jennings, Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and Henry counties. Delaware County reported two deaths, while each of the remaining counties recorded one. A 31-year-old cyclist was among the most recent victims identified; rescue crews found him in Henry County after floodwaters damaged a road section.

The National Weather Service indicated that some areas received over 10 inches of rain during the storm event. River levels surged as multiple storms moved across the state. The White River reached record heights in Anderson and Noblesville, surpassing levels recorded since 1913. Indianapolis experienced its most significant flooding in over thirty years as water inundated low-lying neighborhoods.

Floodwaters Prompt Rescue Operations and Evacuations

Rescue teams employed boats to reach residents stranded by rising waters in several communities. Local authorities facilitated or ordered evacuations in neighborhoods and streets deemed unsafe. Noblesville reported approximately 170 evacuations within a 72-hour span, affecting more than 550 housing units. As conditions deteriorated, Indianapolis activated emergency shelters and dispatched rescue units to areas near the White River.

Power outages spread widely across Indiana due to the storms. Nearly 130,000 utility customers remained without electricity late Sunday, following peak outages approaching 300,000. Floodwaters led to road closures, bridge damages, and pavement washouts in various counties. After the White River’s crest, floodgates in Indianapolis were reopened as water levels receded. Crews continued inspecting infrastructure, while residents began returning to homes affected by flooding and storm debris.

    Federal Assistance Bolsters Flood Response

Governor Mike Braun declared a statewide emergency due to the storm impacts, which overwhelmed local response efforts. Subsequently, President Donald Trump authorized an emergency declaration for Indiana following the state’s federal aid request. Under this declaration, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) can assist state, tribal, and local agencies with emergency operations focused on safeguarding lives, public health, safety, and property. Recovery efforts proceeded as floodwaters gradually receded, with coordination ongoing between different levels of government.

Although some river gauges showed signs of improvement late Sunday, the flooding threat persisted. The White River’s levels dropped from major to moderate flood stages at certain points. However, water levels remained above flood thresholds at multiple monitoring sites near Indianapolis. Damage assessments continued in communities impacted by floodwaters, damaged roads, and power outages. Meanwhile, residents undertook cleanup activities at homes, businesses, and public spaces as Indiana moved forward with its recovery process from the severe weather.
