WYOMING / RankWire.AI / – A black bear near Delta Lake in Grand Teton National Park was euthanized by wildlife personnel after multiple interactions with visitors. Officials reported that the bear had accessed human food and was increasingly approaching people at close proximity. As these encounters persisted, staff found it more difficult to deter the animal. Park managers concluded that this pattern posed a public safety threat, leading to its euthanasia on Sept. 11 after tranquilizing it in the backcountry.

Grand Teton removes bear after repeated visitor approaches
Bear safety remains a priority at Grand Teton after a food-conditioned black bear was removed.

Earlier in 2026, park personnel received reports of a black bear approaching visitors in the Delta Lake area, a popular destination. Initially, officials lacked sufficient evidence to confirm that the bear had become conditioned to human food. This assessment shifted after the bear was rewarded with food multiple times and continued to move toward people. Wildlife teams observed its behavior and attempted hazing techniques to deter the animal from areas frequented by hikers.

Images released after the incident depicted visitors standing mere feet from the bear. Other photos showed the animal inspecting food, backpacks, and unattended items left among rocks and trees. Authorities reminded visitors to immediately secure food and gear when a bear enters the vicinity, emphasizing that under no circumstances should bears access human food. The carcass was airlifted from the remote site the following morning by wildlife crews.

    Human food influences bear conduct

According to the National Park Service, bears can quickly learn to associate humans with easy access to food, a behavior that can lead to increased encounters along trails, near campsites, and other popular recreation spots. The decision to euthanize was driven by repeated food rewards, close approaches, and resistance to hazing efforts. Officials noted these factors demonstrated a significant safety concern. Before resorting to lethal removal, staff evaluated other management options but ultimately found they were not viable.

While relocation is sometimes considered part of bear management, authorities caution that it does not always resolve food-conditioned behaviors. Bears may return to familiar territories or face conflicts with other animals after a move. Suitable habitat with natural food sources and limited human activity is also necessary. For the Delta Lake bear, staff determined that all alternative options had been exhausted. The park describes lethal removal as a last resort when a bear continues to pose a direct threat to humans.

Advisories for visitors regarding bear safety

Grand Teton National Park continues to emphasize that both black bears and grizzly bears are active throughout the area. Visitors are instructed to remain at least 100 yards away from bears and avoid approaching them for photos. Backcountry travelers should travel in groups, make noise, and carry bear spray readily accessible. Properly securing food and scented items when not in use is also urged. These precautions are designed to prevent bears from gaining food rewards and becoming habituated to human presence.

The National Park Service states that about one or two bears are typically removed each year in the park after other measures fail. The majority of these animals are black bears, according to park guidance. Lethal removal is employed when a bear poses a clear safety threat and other methods prove ineffective. The incident at Delta Lake underscores the importance of proper food storage and maintaining distance to minimize conflicts. Officials continue to request visitors report bear encounters and adhere to established wildlife regulations.
